This series of illustrations are antique seasonal recipes designed to be printed on tea towels for homeowning women to display in their kitchens in time for the changing seasons. Inspired by Mid Century illustrators, such as Tammis Keefe and J.P. Miller, I wanted to capture a vintage 1950s illustrative style that hones a limited two-tone color palette to its fullest capabilities on non-white backgrounds. My progress started with a goal of being purely typographical, entirely hand lettered images to practice drawing flourishes onto letters, and then as the concept deepened, I adjusted the typography to be more nested within decorative elements and surrounded by ingredient illustrations. The proximity of the recipe’s body copy to the illustrations and single stroke swirls are meant to invoke a comforting impression to the digestible information.
